A special prehistoric festival will take place at the Crannog Centre, Kenmore, Loch Tay 2nd-5th August.

Our biggest festival yet celebrating the best of prehistory! See specialists in iron, bronze, silver, leather, wood and stone, try your hand at being an archaeologist, learn to whittle, ancient cooking and music, log boats and much, much, more. Artists and craftspeople demonstrating at this year's Celts are Coming festival include: Hamish Lamley of Pictavia Leather, David McGovern Stonemason of Monikie Rock Art, Neil Burridge bronze casting specialist, John Mac spoon carver, Sarah Mac textile worker, the Haddington Weavers, Caroline Nicolay of Pario Gallico cooking demonstrations, Thomas Timbrell of Big Beynons Blacksmithing, Peter Ananin of the Woodland Tannery, Julie Durkacz woodworking & whittling, Wooden Tom woodcarver & turner plus Maestro Paul McDonald of the McDonald Academy of Arms will be demonstrating Pictish arms, marshall culture and weaponry use.  

The bridge that connects communities 2500 years

Musical performances include special opening performances from Alec Souter on the bagpipes and Iona Fyfe singer on Friday 2nd.  Audrey Litterick, local fiddler on Saturday 3rd and Tatha, a newly formed group of local musicians will be performing a composition inspired by the Iron Age crannog people together with ancient Scottish and Perthshire tunes on Sunday 4th.  The music performed at our Celts are Coming event is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund for our 2019 music project, and is inspired by the crannog and the lyre bridge.  Let's put the music back into the crannog!

Iron Age Cooking Workshop led by Caroline Nicolay of Pario Gallico at the Scottish Crannog Centre

Special rate for ARCH Supporters: £40

Using replica tools (knives, pots, cauldron) and ingredients that were available during the Iron Age,  prepare and cook a meal over an open first to feed us all for lunch!  

Participants will also be making flatbreads and/or oatcakes choosing ingredients according to their taste, possibly making butter, cooking eggs, fruits and vegetables in embers. Caroline  will try to adapt to what each participant is interested in learning or trying.  

If there is time, you will learn how to wash dishes the historical way and/or how to light a fire with flint and steel.

There will also be a 'break from history' for tea, coffee and biscuits together with time to have a general chat about historical food, archaeology, tip-sharing and recipes fit for modern kitchens!
